Obituary for James Douglas Flom

James Douglas Flom, age 81 of Faribault, passed away with his wife by his side on Friday, September 13, 2019 following an extended illness.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 21, 2019 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Faribault with visitation at church for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Maple Lawn Cemetery.

James was born November 22, 1937 to Lawrence and Esther Flom in Kenyon, MN. Jim was baptized and confirmed at Holden Lutheran Church near Kenyon. He attended school in Kenyon until his family moved to Austin, MN where he graduated in 1955. Following that he attended Austin Junior College for two years, then Mankato State and finally Winona State, majoring in business. The closer he got to graduation the more he realized he wanted an outdoor career so from 1959 -1965 he worked construction. When a buddy, Harlan, said he was going to Washington State, the two set out on an adventure that led to a love of mountains, the ocean, and nature in general. After six years he returned to Minnesota and from 1974 - 2001 he worked for the Minnesota Department of Transportation, retiring in 2001.

In 1988 he ended his bachelor days and married Betty (Sears) Grandia. They met at Our Saviors Lutheran Church singles group. Betty always said he was "divinely sent". Over the years Jim was an avid reader and constantly learning as evidenced by his "extensive collection of books and magazines". Jim enjoyed travelling with his wife Betty. They took day trips, bus tours and trips up north. Perhaps his greatest joy was fishing and camping trips up north and campfires with his grandkids. In early days he golfed and cross country skied and took long walks.

Jim belonged to Our Saviors Lutheran and the Lamplighter group, River Bend Nature Center, Faribault Senior Center, Paradise Center for the Arts and MN State Retired Employees. He served in the MN Army National Guard for six years.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; stepsons, Doug (Karin) Grandia of Grand Rapids, MN, Drew (Connie) Grandia of Owatonna, MN; grandchildren Zach (Bri) Grandia of Fargo, ND, Jacob Grandia of Grand Rapids, MN, Ben and Katie Grandia of Owatonna, MN; sister, Theone Gilbertson of Faribault, MN; nephews, Mike (Cindy) Gilbertson, Brett (Donna) Gilbertson, Gary (special friend Anne) Gilbertson; brother in law, Howard (Jan) Sears of Ankeny, IA and cousins, Harris Hostager, Ray (Phyllis) Hostager and Ron (Darlene) Romo.

He was preceded in death by parents, Esther and Lawrence Flom; sister and brother in law, Nan and Bud Remold; brother in law, Don Gilbertson and mother in law, Mildred DeJong.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Davin, his kidney specialist, Devita, Dr. Cahill, Abbott Hospital, the entire hospice staff and the staff at Emeralds (St. Lucas) for their guidance and care.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Faribault Area Hospice Foundation.
