Obituary for Siegfried Mittmann

Our Heavenly Father called home Siegfried Mittmann, 93, during the early morning hours of Sunday, January 26, 2020 in Faribault, MN. A man of faith who devoted his life to the Lord, his church, and family, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and is fondly remembered for the sage advice and wisdom of a life well-lived that he warmly shared with friends and loved ones.

Siegfried was born December 25, 1926 in Froben, East Prussia. He married Irene Wagner in Selent, West Germany on April 5, 1953. Sponsored by his Uncle Emil Mittmann and knowing no English, Siegfried immigrated to this country from Germany with his wife, infant daughter, mother, and youngest sister in October 1954.

Having survived five years in multiple Russian prisoner-of-war camps as a result of World War II, Siegfried was no stranger to hardship. Settling in Anaheim, CA, he worked hard to learn the language, working multiple odd jobs, gaining critical skills, and finally landing a job at the National Cash Register Company as a Master Printer, where he worked for 24 years until his retirement in 1984. A few years prior to his retirement, he happened upon the perfect plot of land, bought it, and built his dream: a 23-unit apartment complex which he proudly named Orangewood Manor.

He and Irene sold the apartment complex in 1986 and moved to Herndon, VA to be near their eldest daughter, Brigitte. In Herndon, he discovered his talent for woodworking, creating beautiful pieces of handcrafted furniture. His favorite projects were the small doll cribs that he gave to his granddaughters and other young families at church. In 2003, they moved to Faribault, MN to live near their other daughter, Margaret. Here, Siegfried and Irene enjoyed their golden years together as faithful members of their church, tending to their large garden and spending time with family.

Siegfried is survived by his two daughters, Brigitte (Zachary) Filis of Fairfield, VA and Margaret (Mark) Simonson of Faribault, MN; five grandchildren, Rebekah (Michael) Johnson, Stephanie (Andrew) Eade, Megan (Timothy) Piehl, Erich (Lisa) Miller and Nicole (Timothy) Justin; 15 great-grandchildren, Avari, Noah, Greyson, Logan, Chloe, Ethan, Brooks, Maya, Norah, Alexander, Piper, Isabelle, Miles, Celine, and Millie; 4 sisters, Gertrude Milnik, Ruth Albrecht, Edith (Jerry) Wardwell, and Christel Mittmann; and many nieces and nephews who meant so much to him both in the US and Germany.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Irene, whom he lovingly cared for until her passing in 2018; one brother, Herbert Mittmann and wife Ursula; 2 sisters, Kathe and husband Walter Milczewsky, Olga and husband Rudi Eichmann, and 2 brothers-in-law, Helmut Milnik and Arnold Albrecht.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider a donation to the Trinity Radio Club of his church. Siegfried tuned in often and so enjoyed listening to Sunday services when he was unable to attend in person. Trinity Radio Club, 530 4th Street NW, Faribault, MN 55021.

Funeral services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, Faribault on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. with the Reverend Paul Rieger, officiating. Interment will be at Maple Lawn Cemetery, Faribault.

Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
