Obituary for Rev. Maynard A. Spitzack

Reverend Maynard A. Spitzack, age 81 of Dundas, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 31, 2019 at Trinity Care Center, Farmington surrounded by his loving family.

Funeral services will be held at Peace Lutheran Church, Faribault on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. with the Reverends Robert L. Mundahl, Brent Klein and Matthew Lane officiating. Interment will be at Maple Lawn Cemetery, Faribault with military rites provided by Rice County Central Veterans Association.

Visitation will be at Boldt Funeral Home, Faribault on Friday, April 5th from 4 to 7 p.m. and also at church for one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

Maynard Alfred, the son of Alfred H. and Marian J. (Haley) Spitzack was born November 2, 1937 in Warsaw, MN. He married Gloria Ann Bartelt on December 10, 1960 at Peace Lutheran Church, Faribault. They lived in various cities in southern Minnesota before being called into ministry.

Maynard was baptized and confirmed in the faith in Faribault and attended Faribault High School, Class of 1955. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force, being honorably discharged in 1958 and 1960 respectively. He graduated from the Minnesota School of Business in 1963 and served as a District Court Reporter in the Fifth Judicial District in Minnesota for nine years. After being called to the ministry, he entered Concordia Theological Seminary in Springfield, IL in 1971. He served his vicarage year in Monango, ND and graduated from Concordia in 1975. He faithfully shepherded congregations in Boone, Dayton and Eldora, Iowa before returning to Minnesota to serve in Prior Lake and Eagan. In his retirement, he served as visitation pastor at Peace and Trinity in Faribault. Throughout his life, he was faithful to preaching God’s word and sharing God’s love with others.

Maynard enjoyed many hobbies, including reading, walking, woodcarving, woodworking, watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings and playing the accordion and cribbage. Spending time with his family was his greatest joy and he especially enjoyed their annual family campout.

Maynard is survived by his wife, Gloria; four children, Holly (and Brian) Comer, Cheryl (and Mike) Nieland, Tim (and Jil) Spitzack and Carla (and Eric) Johnson; 14 grandchildren, Melissa DeRossett, Aaron Daleske, Cody, Zachary and Jordan Nieland, Caitlyn Fekete, Alyssa Restifo, Jacob Spitzack, Jenna Spitzack, Amy, Andrew, Anne, Christian and Abigail Johnson; six great grandchildren, Alexis DeRossett, JJ and Finley Daleske, Arabella and Weston Nieland and Ashlynn Nieland. He would have welcomed three more great grandchildren later this year. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Abraham of Rochester; his brother, David Spitzack of Adel, IA and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Betty Pennington.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Radio Club or The Lutheran Hour.
