He graduated from Owatonna High School in 1948, earned his bachelors at the University of MN in 1952, and his masters from Mankato State University in 1972. Lloyd married Betty Bredlow on August 23, 1952 in Owatonna, a union that would last 61 years. Lloyd taught Industrial Arts and Physical Education in Decorah, IA where he started the wrestling program, and then went on to teach Industrial Arts and coach wrestling at Richfield H.S., MN. He was honored in 1990 as teacher of the year by the state technology education association, for his service to the students and integration of computer technology into the RHS curriculum. After retiring from teaching Lloyd built a home in Faribault, and later worked for the US Department of Labor where he met many business owners in Southern Minnesota while gathering information for the consumer price index. Lloyd served in the U.S. Army and was a member of and past commander of American Legion Post 43, Faribault. He was active in the Honor Guard and played taps at hundreds of funerals much like his father, Lloyd Sr. who was Lloyd and his twin brother Loie’s first trumpet teacher. His commitment to seeing the realization of the Rice County Veterans Memorial was immeasurable. Lloyd was a member of the Zuhrah Shrine, Minneapolis, past president of the Zuhrah Band and performed and later managed several of the shrine’s musical organizations. Lloyd’s involvement in music touched many people in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area as well as in Owatonna and Faribault through community band concerts and performances in care facilities with his long time musical partner May Bottke.
Lloyd will always be remembered for his zest of life, his passion for music, and love and devotion to family. He is survived by three children, Sheryl of Eden Prairie, Gregory (Nina) of Beaver Dam, WI, and Thomas (Francesca Gori) of Sudbury, MA; six grandchildren, GySgt Alexander (Mandy) Grandprey USMC, Capt. Anthony (Katie) Grandprey USMC, Ella Grandprey, Grace Grandprey, Travis (Becky) Kline, and Alisha (Jose) Rodriguez; nine great grandchildren, Trevor Kampstra, Kaylee Robinson, Isabelle Rodriguez, Jose Angel Rodriguez, Felix Martha Rodriguez, Emeline, Eva, Eleanor and William Grandprey; His special friend and companion Pat Dietz; and his twin brother, Loie of Windom.
