Obituary for David Michael Schroeder

David Michael Schroeder of Owatonna died at home in the comfort of his family on January 28, 2019, due to Glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. He was 63 years young.

Dave was born in New Ulm, MN. He and his sister, Lynn, lived with their parents, Jo Ann and James Schroeder in Sleepy Eye. Dave was especially close to his grandparents William and Mary Kunze. He spent much of his time at their farm. From a young age, his grandfather taught him to shoot, a skill he honed and valued all his life. His grandmother bought him his first guitar when he was 14, encouraging another life-long passion. They taught him to be a humble and kind man.

Dave enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at 17, prior to being drafted. He served from 1973-1977. Dave was meritoriously promoted twice after only two years of service to the rank of Sergeant and was awarded the Good Conduct and Marksman medals. Although his battalion was deployed twice to Vietnam, they were redirected both times.

He married Juliann Lang in 1975 and they had one son, Andrew. He married Susanne in 1985 and had three daughters, Chelsea (Lovett), Rachel, and Erin (Blesbois). Many memories were created on cross-country vacations and camping trips, boating, canoeing, hunting, fishing, hiking, setting up, and tearing down the camper(s) which was his children's favorite past time. Later, his sons-in-law Colin Lovett, Arnaud Blesbois, and granddaughter Jocelyne Blesbois and mother-in-law, Erna Jurgensen would join in these memories.

In 1982, Dave earned his Bachelor's of Science in both Law Enforcement and Corrections. Being bullied in his early years prompted his interest in protecting people from harm for which he dedicated his entire career. He retired from the Owatonna Police Department in August of 2011, after 25 years. Dave taught Defensive Tactics, served as an Investigator and School Liaison Officer and was a member of the regional SWAT team and a sniper. He loved working as a policeman and felt a great sense of purpose while serving as an officer. After retirement Dave drove semi truck for three years until returning to the Owatonna Police Department as a Community Service Officer where he served at the Owatonna Middle School until the onset of his illness.

Dave was a gifted musician and lover of music, especially acoustic music. He sang, played guitar, harmonica, banjo, and other string instruments he decided to pick up. His family and friends fondly remember his ability to play any tune by ear. Many evenings and weekends were spent listening to him play in the living room. He played with several groups over the years such as Berechiah, Northwood's Critters, Floral Sofa, Hot-n-Bothered, the Pedagues, and for the last 15 years with the Gogs. Dave participated in the Hometown Sampler every year and was a charter member of the planning group for this benefit in 1994. He valued the many friendships he developed with fellow musicians.

Among Dave's many, many interests was shooting clay targets. The interest was first sparked while shooting with his grandfather's league. In honor of this experience, Dave led a group to launch the Owatonna High School Clay Target team in 2016. He became head coach and felt great pride in the team and his fellow coaches.

Through the years, Dave's many interests included building primitive long bows, enjoyed rendezvous reenactments, fly-fishing, hunting, road and mountain biking. These interests were shared with his family and many friends along the way.

Dave is preceded in death by his grandparents, parents and sister, Lynn Sweeney.

A celebration of Dave's life will be held at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 1909 St. Paul Road, Owatonna with visitation on Friday 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. and one hour before the service on Saturday, February 9th from 9:30 -10:30 a.m. His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Everyone is invited for lunch following the service. Burial with full military honors will take place at a later date.

A donation will be given by the family to the Owatonna High School Student Activities Scholarship Fund and to Disabled American Veterans, on Dave’s behalf.
